*MINIMUM SCORE
required for first attempt on Questions section (15/25)
- I will grade the writing section separately.
- Only 1st & 2nd scores considered (You can try this as many times as you want, but your instructor will only consider the 1st & 2nd scores.)

- Use the CC button at the bottom of the Youtube video to follow the subtitles (字幕).

THIS ASSIGNMENT INCLUDES a SHORT ESSAY:

ESSAY QUESTION:
How did the American Occupation of Japan affect or influence specific socio-economic changes in Japan after 1945?
Consider the video and the reading material in this assignment.

Answering a HOW-question about history:

- I am NOT asking you if the American Occupation was a "good thing" or a "bad thing."
- I am NOT asking you about the good points and bad points of the Occupation.
- I am NOT asking how you feel about Americans or Japanese culture.

-- I want to know if you watched the video and if you understand the content. It is a fact that Japan was affected by the Occupation in many ways. I want to know HOW it was affected.
-- It is OK to include your opinion in your response, but please focus on some aspect (part) of the topic and be specific about what you want to say.
For example, do you want to focus on the status of women, on labor (working conditions), on daily rights as provided by the new Constitution, on Japan's limited (pacifist) military capacity, etc.?

Example of a poor answer (this is only an example, so I only wrote 50 words here):
"There are various good points and bad points about the U.S. Occupation. Americans did many things in Japan. Japanese culture has changed in some positive ways such as women have more freedom now. But Japan also faced shame after 1945. I feel Japan must become more independent in the world these days."

THINKING, NOT just RESPONDING
The question for this assignment is an evaluation of your critical thought process. It is NOT about how well you write English. Please do NOT rely on AI or ChatGPT, etc. to produce perfect English. I am not interested in how well you can copy-paste information or use translation-writing software. I want to know how you construct your thinking about the question. Do your best with the English writing. But I will grade you mostly on your thinking, not your English ability.

Writing Assignment:
This is a 15-point item. To receive credit for this part of the assignment, your answer must be a minimum of 125 words. However, I suggest that you consider the question fully and provide some reasoning and details for your thinking. Well-considered responses will typically be longer than 125 words. I will give more than 15 points for answers that are very well reasoned and detailed.

WARNING:
- Answers shorter than 125 words will receive 0 points.
- If you write no answer at all, then you will receive MINUS-15 points for the whole assignment.

Agian, this is the QUESTION:
-> How did the American Occupation of Japan affect or influence specific socio-economic changes in Japan after 1945?

Thank you
